I could tell you all about my hair trials and tribulations from every day of my life.
I could tell about the middle school epiphany of "OMG I have curly hair" and how everyone at school thought I got a perm, when I let it go natural. I called them fools.
I could tell you about high school when I ventured into the world of hair products. I could tell you how I used the "bad curly scrunching gel" that turns hair crispy. Or how in the winter I would try to achieve the silky locks of my straight haired peers and would spend hours in front of a mirror with a paddle brush.
I could tell you about my freshman year of college and the awakening of the Hair Flat Iron. I could tell you about the ectasy I felt when I had the stick straight hair I had always envied. And how I "rocked" that super straight hair for a long time.
I could tell you how I ventured into a world of more sophisticated hair products and tried them all and how the humidity in the summer justified those purchases because my curls were on target.
Or I could tell you how I've gotten lazy with my hair because it just gets more dry and more frizzy as the years go on. How I just don't want to take the time to put 50 bajillion gels on it and then use the diffuser, only to have a dry frizzy hair that I will inevitably put up. How my hair is always up because I just can't deal with it.
College is an acceptable place for a ponytail/up do doodle everyday, but I want to be able to have a more professional look (aka wear my hair down), especially since I'll be teaching in the fall and entering a more professional work place.
I've tried A LOT! I do like John Frieda's Frizz Ease but I need more - something thicker, I think. I use about twice as much conditioner as I do shampoo. I've tried Aveda curly products, which I like too but it just seems that my hair still frizzes up. I haven't tried the Phyto line (its a pretty little penny) but if it works - hey I'll try it.
So Bloggers - how do you DO your hair? Curly or Straight? What works for you? I'll take any hair product advice - shampoo/conditioner/gel/mousse/serum/spray!!

i am pretty sure we are hair twins.! my hair also is naturally abuburn, super curly and thick and basiclaly a PIA to deal with. Here is what has been working for me (get ready for a novel)
When I am wearing it curly:
I use Matrix Be Curly Shampoo and Conditioner and I don't wash the conditioner all the way out. Then when its still wet I put in Sunsilk Anti Poof creme, finger comb, and do NOT touch it again. The reason curly hair gets so frizzy is from being touched too much before it dries, though this is a lesson I learned too late in life! WHen it's dry, spray a little of whatever hair spray you use just to hold the curl and you should be good to go, nice curls but no frizz or crunchiness.
Now when I wear it straight. The trick is to not start blowing out until it is about 80% dry. So let it air dry for a while or diffuse it gently until you get to that point and then go to town with your round brush and dryer. You definitley want to use some kind of protective spray too since curly hair tends to be dry and dramaged ANYWAY without the heat torture (I use Tresseme Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Protective Spray). And after you have flat ironed go over your hair with the blow dryer on COOL to seal in your cuticles. It adds lots of shine! I also like to sleep on my blowout to flatten it out some. My hair always looks better like 1-2 days after I blew it out!
Also, don't wash your hair every day. I wash mine probably 3 times a week, sometimes more but anything more than that really dries out my hair.
Hope some of this info was userful!
I have fine wavy/curly hair that tends to get dry and frizzy with oily roots. It's a lot of fun. I almost always wear my hair up also, but I have discovered a few amazing products recently. I went to a beauty boutique in town and the owner felt my hair and then had me come back without any product in it before making recommendations.
In the Phyto line, she recommended Phytojoba shampoo, Phytobaume conditioner, and Phyto 7 leave in.
The other line she recommended was Terax, the Collagene or Miele shampoo and Crema conditioner.
I have been using Terax Collagene and Crema and Phyto 7 since January and I swear it is like I have a whole new head of hair. I barely even need product now, even in Florida's humidity.
Yes these products are expensive, but I am still using the same stuff I purchased back in January, except for the Phyto 7. To me, it has been completely worth the cost because of the transformation I have seen in my hair.
Are you ready for all of this? I apologize in advance, this is probably going to be a lot.
My hair is naturally curly/wavy/dry. It's mostly course and dry with some extra dryness factored in since I highlite (bleach). I like to use "blonde" shampoos and conditioners. But my classic care for hair is Head and SHoulders (I just feel like my head/hair isn't 'clean' unless I shampoo with a dandruff shampoo, weird, I know) "sensitive care" which is safe for color treated hair. As for conditioner, I love Dove (smells great, doesn't weigh down) or Pantene Daily Moisture (or something like that).
After shower, spray some leave in conditioner (typically Dove for highlited hair). I rub Catwalk "curls Rock" curl creme on my hair (sometimes I'll use a curl mousse, like tresseme just to change it up a bit) just something that doesn't weight hair down too much, not sticky, not crunchy (like gel). Then I wait - the hair has to be the right ratio of dryness before I can actually blow dry it. Then, I hit it with a diffuser and after a few minutes of drying with the hair dryer, I bust our the hairspray, then dry, then hair spray, then dry. It's hard to explain. My summer hairspray rotation is John Frieda Frizz-Ease Moisture Barrier Firm hold hairspray (that I use sparingly, it can make hair crunchy (yuck), but if I use the right amount it holds all day with no crunch) then I finish with Catwalk Mega shine or something hair spray. Yep! It's all about the hairspray for me! This is my current product rotation, but I've used/tried a lot of products, I'm always on the hunt for something better. Honestly though, I've used some super expensive products and don't see a worthwhile difference. Good luck! Sorry for writing so much, and I thought I was 'keeping it simple!'
These are the kind of comments I love and NEED! Thanks for the tips - I'll be perusing the CVS hair aisle for awhile later this week! :)
my hair is thin, thin, thin, with a slight wave and limp, dark dirty blond, light brown. it doesnt help much that because i am in japan and japanese hairstylists don't know western hair, so i havent had a haircut since january - so i am way overdue for a haircut in the first place!
i usually get mandy moore haircuts, back when it was brown and shoulder length - layers with sideswept bangs. i have even had it shorter. my hair is a bit oily, so i have to be careful.
as for the limp factor, i once tried bumble and bumbles volumizing shampoo and conditioner - amazing. then again, i have recently stopped blow drying my hair, so i really don't know what my hair will really be like until it gets properly cut, but it is softer now. but i usually have it in a ponytail, its really hot here.
i also use aveda's volumizing mousse, since it's light. i might check out come other aveda products too - but when i cant afford it, garnier's volumizing shampoo is pretty decent. i try not to use alot of hair product because i don't want to weigh my hair down - though one trick i heard is to color your hair a darker shade because adding color gives more oomph. my goal is always oomph.
thinking of trying a body wave and the hair a shade darker, but blonde highlights worked nicely on me too.
I have thick, dry, kinky, frizzy hair. Until recently hubby had never seen me not blow dry and flat iron my hair. I just couldn't sit with the hair dryer and flat iron on and it be in the mid 90's and humid. Talk about having to take a shower again.
Just had the hair hi-lighted yesterday and so much more happy with it. I just wish I could get it to look like it does when I walk out of the salon.
I noticed that they used Rusk Sensories leave in conditioner.
I have pretty straight(long)hair and a pretty easy routine. I wash every morning (extra conditioner) and then use a smoother prior to blowdrying with a brush and comb. I then add a little spray to give it body and then a zig zag part and then spray with gloss. I know it's bad to wash everyday but I can't do it... My favorite product lines are: Kerastase, Phyto, B&B, Fekkai & Rene Furterer. My favorite cheap line is Aussie moist, works the best for me.
This could be my hair story. I thought my hair wasn't curly anymore, just wavy, until middle school, because I used to brush it with a tight bristle brush while it was wet and one day I let it go and BAM! Curls. I always air dry my hair. I comb it out with a wide comb either in shower or straight out then I usually use a cocktail (that's what the aveda girl calls it) of Aveda Be Curly and Confixor (the confixer has a bit of a gel property) I apply that when it's quite wet, scrunch it up a bit with the towel and leave alone til almost dry-at that point there is usually some craziness, so I use a spray bottle and get it a little wet and sometimes add a bit more gel and rescrunch. Usually works well, but takes about an hour or more...however, i don't wash at night after all of that, the next day, I stick my head under teh faucet and get it pretty wet, though not enough to wash again, reapply gel and go. I can usually do that twice before rewashing. One secret I've learned. keep a mirror handy, I usually envision the frizz about a thousand times worse than it actually is and immediately run for a rubber band, when it's actually not bad. I also still like to keep my hair pulled up most of the time, so another tip, explore ways to pull it up that look more tailored for work.
